The Phoenix Moment: Rising Together Through NAR’s Challenges
Walking through the hallways of the National Association of Realtors (NAR) NXT conference this week, I felt a profound sense of belonging. This wasn’t just another conference; it felt like a “Phoenix moment” for our association—a pivotal time for transformation and renewal. I’d like to share some reflections from this week that reaffirmed my love for NAR and reminded me of the strength we all carry, especially in challenging times.
Moments that Define Us
The most memorable parts of this week weren’t in the spotlight. Instead, they happened in quiet hallway exchanges and late-night conversations. These moments, where friends and colleagues shared their stories, left a deep impact. Some opened up about the struggles of leadership, of carrying both the burden of expectations and the passion that drives us forward. These conversations reminded me that we’re all in this together, and that real change often comes from these personal, vulnerable exchanges. They also deepen our friendships and community more.
One especially meaningful conversation happened around a networking table I was leading with people who expressed just how much their association or group (like ARREA) inspired them to be better. That affirmation of community gave me hope and reminded me of my own journey. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the support of my association, and seeing others share that same gratitude felt like a moment of unity.
Living Our Values in Every Interaction
Natalie Davis’s session on business planning was a reminder of something deeper—that our core values are the heart of our professional lives. I came away from that session reflecting on my own values: play and creativity, integrity, positive authenticity, and empowerment. For me, these values aren’t just words; they shape every conversation, every challenge, and every triumph. They’re my compass, guiding me to approach real estate—and life—with purpose and meaning. I was reminded that when we lead with our values, we inspire others to find their own path. I wish I had attended more sessions, but I am so glad I caught this one.
Resilience in the Face of Exhaustion
If you spoke to anyone at this year’s conference, there was a sentiment you’d hear over and over—a sense of tiredness, a collective fatigue that seemed to hang in the air. At first, I thought it might just be the full schedules, the bustling days, and perhaps even the dry convention center air. But as I spoke with more people, I realized it went deeper. This wasn’t just physical exhaustion; it was the kind of tiredness that comes from enduring something heavy for a long time.
For many, this past year has tested their patience and resolve in ways that go beyond the usual demands. NAR has faced intense criticism, both from the media and within its own ranks. In a world where we are often expected to be flawless, to deliver results, and to uphold a certain standard, it’s painful to feel like you’re constantly under a microscope, particularly when the work being done is meant to uplift others. Our leaders, staff, and members have all felt the weight of those expectations, and that weight can wear down even the most resilient among us.
Yet, amid this collective exhaustion, I saw something powerful—a kind of quiet, steadfast resilience. The people who came to this event, who made time for the conversations and sessions, are the ones who continue to believe in NAR’s mission despite the challenges. There’s a determination here that’s easy to overlook if you’re not paying attention, a dedication that says, “We may be tired, but we’re not defeated.” It’s as though every setback has only added layers to our strength, making us more resilient with each challenge faced.
We stood together this week, bruised but unbroken. There’s beauty in that kind of resilience, in knowing that, despite everything, we’re still here, still standing, and still moving forward. The tiredness was palpable, but so was the commitment. It was a reminder that resilience isn’t about avoiding struggles; it’s about pushing forward, even when the road feels uphill. And as I looked around, I realized this isn’t just exhaustion—it’s the kind of resilience that leads to renewal, the kind that proves we are ready to face the future, no matter what it holds.
Belonging as Ourselves
Throughout the week, I was struck by how many people feel a disconnect when they don’t fit into conventional molds of leadership. This is obviously something I have spoke of before. I feel fortunate to have supporters who see me for who I am, yet I know many friends who struggle to find that same acceptance. They bring unique talents and perspectives, but they’re often overlooked, because they choose to be their “out of the box” selves. This is something I want to explore more deeply in a future article, but for now, I want to honor those leaders who, even when they feel unseen, keep pushing forward. I believe that true representation is about recognizing and valuing all voices, not just those who “fit” an expected mold. Our diversity is our strength.
The Power of Small Acts of Kindness
One of the most touching aspects of this week was the feedback I received from NAR staff members. Several approached me, expressing appreciation for my kindness and for simply talking to them. It broke my heart a little to realize that many don’t experience that same respect or acknowledgment. These are the people who work tirelessly to make our association and events successful. A simple “thank you” or a moment to chat can make all the difference. It’s a reminder that kindness costs nothing, but its impact is immeasurable. To all those working behind the scenes: thank you. Your dedication does not go unnoticed.
Kevin’s Wisdom: A Guiding Light
Kevin’s inaugural words, “Take the job seriously, not yourself,” resonated deeply with me. That simple statement is a reminder to stay grounded and humble, to approach our roles with a sense of humor and lightness. It’s a guiding principle that brings both levity and purpose, especially in times when the weight of responsibility feels heavy.
Empowered to Teach and Inspire
This week, I also had the chance to share my own knowledge through six classes, each one a new experience. From three networking sessions (much like REBAR) with Craig Grant on public speaking, or when I taught one on social media in my gown, plus referral networking on a sleepy Sunday morning, I felt privileged to connect with and empower others. Assisting Charlie Todd from Improv Anywhere in his “Surprise and Delight” session was especially inspiring—it reminded me of the importance of joy and spontaneity, and I plan to bring more of that spirit to future events. We delighted many expo attendees with a surprise dance party. Additionally I had the pleasure of leading a session and workshop on video during TechXcelerate, with my colleagues Angie Javier, who covered AI, and Michael Tritthart, who covered Google. My work and session with John Gillam on “Beyond the Buyers Contract” was the cherry on top, a session that reinforced my commitment to building trust and value in our industry with a bit of pizazz, alongside one of my best friends.
Moving Forward with Purpose
Reflecting on this week, I see NAR standing at a crossroads—what I can only describe as its “Phoenix moment.” In so many ways, we are being called to rise from the challenges, not just for ourselves but for the legacy we’re building together. Our association, like the mythical Phoenix, faces a choice: to rebuild, grow, and transform, emerging stronger from the ashes of struggle. This year, we’ve felt the weight of being tested in ways we may not have anticipated, yet we have shown that even under scrutiny, we remain committed. Every setback has fueled our resilience, and though we may be tired, there’s a power in knowing that we’re still here, still standing, and still pressing forward.
This week, I was reminded that our strength doesn’t come from never facing criticism or obstacles; it comes from how we handle them. Standing alongside people who have given so much to NAR, I felt an unwavering sense of purpose. The people who showed up are the ones who refuse to let challenges define us. And as we move forward, I am inspired to be a part of a renewed NAR—one that acknowledges the past, embraces the present, and boldly shapes the future.
This sense of resilience, of rising stronger, isn’t just a story of our association; it’s a story about every single member who sees value in what we do. Together, we are shaping an association that not only learns from its past but also dares to reimagine what’s possible. It’s a reminder that every one of us—staff, leaders, and members alike—plays a role in this transformation. I am filled with pride knowing that I belong to an association that, even when it’s battered, finds the courage to keep showing up and standing tall.
In the face of all we’ve been through, I believe our best days are ahead of us. This Phoenix moment is just the beginning of a new chapter, one that calls on each of us to keep pushing forward, lifting each other up, and realizing our collective potential. We will rise, not because we’ve been spared challenges, but because we’ve faced them head-on, together.
Looking Forward with Purpose
As I reflect on this week and the challenges we’ve faced together, I’m filled with both pride and anticipation. Next year, I have the honor of stepping into the role of Co-Vice Chair for the NAR NXT Conference Committee with an amazing team (Co-Chair Thomas Daley, Co-Chair Jennifer Wauhob, Co-Vice Chair David Favret and Past Chair Harrison Beacher), with the responsibility of leading as chair in 2026. It’s a role I don’t take lightly. Standing at this “Phoenix moment” for NAR, I feel a renewed sense of purpose to help guide our association through whatever comes next. I look forward to fostering spaces where every voice is valued, where resilience is celebrated, and where our shared commitment to each other can thrive.
This journey is only beginning, and I’m grateful to be part of it, to work alongside the incredible people who make NAR what it is. Together, we’ll keep moving forward, lifting each other up, and building an association that reflects the best of who we are.
